Backyard Biodiversity
Why Diversify?
The relationship between insects and plants goes back a millennia. They have evolved side by side over hundreds of thousands of years-- long before the lawn was ever dreamt into existence. The mouth parts of our pollinators evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to fit the flower shapes. Beneficial insects can only digest certain plants. Right now insects all over the world are declining at a rapid rate because they don’t have anything to eat. There are many species who are already 40% extinct. Life as we know it depends upon a healthy flourishing relationship between plants and insects. 98% of this country is privately owned. Our future is in our own hands. If every person with a postage stamp plot of land or a balcony for containers planted just one native plant, we could not only end the rapid decline of insects, but also start to reverse it. This issue IS reversible.
